Meet the Maker...
From classic masterpieces for a timeless look to an altogether more bohemian silhouette, all Leigh Hetherington bridal gowns have one important asset in common: they are all crafted in the UK using only the finest fabrics.
Can you give a little overview of how you came to be a bridal designer? Was there anything in particular that drew you to bridal?
After graduating from Northumbria University with a degree in fashion design in 1998, I knew I wanted to create couture gowns. Having looked at the attention to detail and beautiful fabrics used by iconic designers including Madeleine Vionnet, Norman Hartnell and Christian Dior, I wanted to incorporate these qualities in my designs.
Creating a wedding dress is a great privilege.
What, in your opinion sets a Leigh Hetherington design apart? What are your core brand values?
Our gowns are crafted by hand in the UK. That in itself sets us apart. All of our gowns are truly individual using traditional dressmaking techniques with modern design influences.
Describe your latest collection...
Bohemian Luxe. This trend is so current at the moment. We have an open mind and enjoy experimenting with fabrics and styles which means we discover the beautiful and unique designs we know will best represent our brand.
What fabrics and embellishments do you love to work with?
Soft laces with botanical trailing leaf designs. Layers of soft tulle, georgette and lace scalloped edgings can also be seen within the collection.
If you could design a wedding gown for anyone in the world, who would that be?
Ali MacGraw. Love Story is one of my all time favourite films: all consuming yet tragic love, where Ali played such an inspiring character named Jenny.
What style gown do you love the most right now?
Care-free and non-restrictive bohemian. It gives brides a much more natural look.
Where is your happy place?
In my studio surrounded by mountains of fabric, chocolate and my little West Highland Terrier, Hamish.
How have you grown over the past year and, more importantly, what has it taught you?
To have a good work/life balance. It’s been a tough year, but it has given me the opportunity to reflect and open my mind to make this new collection – which I’m very proud of."
