Some wedding venues are unforgettable, but few can rival the grandeur of one of the world's greatest ancient wonders.
For London couple Dr Monica Nayyar and Vivek Nandha, the majestic Great Pyramids of Giza provided an extraordinary backdrop for a spectacular traditional Indian wedding, blending centuries-old heritage with a dreamscape wedding.
A breathtaking fusion of British, Indian and Egyptian heritage, this spectacular multi-day celebration proves that the most unforgettable weddings are rooted in meaning as much as beauty.
Lockdown Love Story
Although their wedding celebrated history on an epic scale, Monica and Vivek's own love story began in a thoroughly modern way. The pair first met in 2015 while studying at neighbouring London universities, with Monica attending King's College London and Vivek studying at the London School of Economics. Their friendship gradually evolved into a relationship in 2020, with their first date taking place on a sun-soaked picnic in the Cotswolds just before lockdown brought the world to a standstill.
Their engagement was every bit as adventurous as the celebrations that followed. After completing a long-awaited trek to Everest Base Camp in Nepal, the couple travelled to Jaipur, where Vivek proposed during sunset on the rooftop of the magnificent Samode Palace, with fireworks lighting up the evening sky.
The celebrations officially began in London with an intimate legal ceremony at Marylebone Town Hall, followed by a reception at St James's Court Hotel surrounded by close family and friends. From there, the festivities moved to Egypt, where more than 180 guests gathered for an unforgettable three-day celebration from 3-6 September 2025.
The grand finale took place beneath the illuminated Great Pyramids of Giza, one of the most iconic wedding locations in the world. Working alongside the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, Monica and Vivek became one of only a handful of couples ever granted permission to host a private celebration at the UNESCO World Heritage Site, with proceeds from the event contributing towards the ongoing conservation of the ancient monument.

Creating the reception required an extraordinary logistical effort. Once the Giza Plateau closed to visitors each evening, teams spent ten consecutive nights constructing an entirely bespoke venue directly on the desert sand. Every element, from kitchens and staging to lighting and guest facilities, was built from scratch before being dismantled shortly after the celebrations concluded.
Inspired by the colours of the surrounding desert, the reception featured a palette of warm sand and clay tones with restrained floral styling that complemented rather than competed with the dramatic backdrop of the illuminated Pyramids and the Sphinx.
The first event, a vibrant Haldi ceremony, took place at the Sofitel Cairo El Gezirah on the banks of the Nile, setting the tone for the celebrations to come. Guests were then transported by traditional sailing boats across the river to a private island palace owned by Prince Naguib, a descendant of Egypt's former royal family, where the couple exchanged vows during a breathtaking Hindu ceremony.
The palace courtyard was transformed into a romantic alfresco setting, illuminated by thousands of twinkling fairy lights. At its heart stood a floral mandap dressed in soft blush pink blooms, creating an elegant contrast against the historic surroundings. Egyptian drummers welcomed guests from the riverbank before leading them towards the ceremony, adding a spectacular cultural flourish that perfectly reflected the couple's vision of honouring all three of their heritages.

Fashion played an equally important role. The bride wore designs sourced from London, Cairo and Delhi, while the groom opted for bespoke tailoring from Huntsman Savile Row alongside Qubik. Every piece of jewellery worn throughout the celebrations was handcrafted by Vivek's father, a fifth-generation jeweller, adding an especially meaningful family touch to the occasion.
As darkness fell over the desert, the celebrations reached their unforgettable finale. The couple shared their first dance beneath the illuminated pyramids before guests enjoyed dinner at the foot of the Sphinx. Later in the evening, biodegradable lanterns drifted into the night sky as What a Wonderful World played, creating a breathtaking conclusion to a wedding that celebrated not only two families coming together, but also the rich cultures, history and traditions that shaped their remarkable journey.
