Wylam Brewery Real Wedding

Rachel and Alex first met one another in 2008 when on a school trip to New York. Rachel said: “Alex is a school year younger than me, so we had never met before. I booked the last place on the trip and I’m glad I did!” Almost 10 years later, the couple said “I do” in the picturesque setting of Wylam Brewery.

“We both agreed from the offset we didn't want an over the top, pretentious wedding. We wanted something fun and laid back, something that reflected us as a couple and something our families and friends would feel comfortable and relaxed at. We had a late wedding at 4pm on Monday 12th June. One of the main reasons for this was to cut out the ‘boring sit down meal’ and to reduce formalities of the day. We both wanted to get married and then have a party, and we sure did that!”

“I am an interior designer and had heard about Wylam Brewery as a wedding venue quite early on. We wanted somewhere cool, but laid back. Somewhere welcoming, but edgy. We looked at the warehouse at Hoults Yard at first, but then met up with the team at Wylam, walked round and fell in love with it! Colette Malik our wedding coordinator was so helpful, the management and team on our wedding day were incredible.

"The food was to die for - we opted for street food style chicken curry with rice and naan bread. The choice of drinks are great, although strong! Beware of the hangovers! The team were so attentive and made me feel at ease the full day, they bent over backwards for us all day. We had the gin bar open for guests, as well as the other three bars in the venue, so guests were served really easily. Guests were also offered the chance to experience a tour of the brewery, which they all enjoyed! Being one of the first handful to be married at Wylam Brewery I found it difficult to visualise how a wedding would operate there and I hope that our photos allow others to realise just how great of a venue it is!”

How did you choose your photographer?
“I first met Jade at a Wedding Wonder Show at The Stadium of Light, and then at St James Park. Her style of photography was out of this world! She has such a creative eye and flare and I knew she would be perfect for our wedding and our venue!"

“Jade was supportive all the way, we had a pre-wedding shoot to help us relax and her and the camera (it probably helped we were still drunk from the night before when we met her) gave us much more confidence. She was great on the day, she mingled in with our guests, she didn’t pester Alex or I, she let us do our thing and followed us round and captured lots of natural shots. We also did a few styled shots in the grounds of Exhibition Park. She felt like one of our friends on the day and it was an absolute pleasure to work with her and she is someone we will use again and again! Couldn't recommend her enough!!!”

Advice for other brides and grooms?
“Don't get too wrapped up on planning the ins and outs of your wedding day. Make the most and enjoy the build up. Work with experts in their field to make sure you get what you hope for. Always allow for that little extra than you budget for (too tempting!) I found it useful to keep a spreadsheet of our costs and purchases, so we knew where we were with everything.

“A marriage is for life, so don’t consume all of your time on planning this one day! Don't worry about sticking to guides online, there’s no right or wrong way of doing things. Go with what’s right for you as a couple.

“Relax, have fun, take time out on the day with each other and look around at your guests once in a while to see how much fun they're having! It’s a good feeling!”

What was your highlight of the day?

Alex: “Marrying my soulmate and best friend!”
