The Common Room

Set within a grand gothic Grade-II* listed building in the centre of Newcastle, The Common Room offers an utterly unique and inspiring space for your wedding day.

One of Newcastle’s most significant historical buildings, The Common Room on Westgate Road (known to most as The Mining Institute) is being lovingly-restored to create a new centre for education and training, as well as a spectacular space for weddings.

Funded by a £4.1 million award from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the venue has undergone a full renovation and will reopen in early 2021 with a range of beautiful spaces available for ceremonies and receptions.

Love in Motion

Built between 1869 and 1872 to provide a headquarters for the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers, The Common Room drives forward charm of both the past and future, marrying contemporary re-touches with original period features.

There are three beautiful rooms in which to host your special day, each licensed for civil ceremonies – Wood Hall, The Lecture Theatre and the Arbitration Room.

So, whether you want to spend the whole day there, or just a part of it, there’s a space to suit.

Wood Hall

Located in the heart of the building, the Wood Hall is a truly unique and breathtaking space perfect for daytime and evening celebrations.

Fitting up to 150 guests, marvel in the architectural amazement of this room with vast vaulted glass ceilings, sensational stained glass windows and original literature lining the walls providing nods to its industrial past.

The Lecture Theatre

Looking for a dramatic entrance? The Lecture Theatre offers one like none other. Have up to 100 guests sat in the stands as you journey down the stairs to your other half waiting at the bottom – just watch your step!

A ceremony in the Lecture Theatre is truly something to behold, with intimate lighting, atmospheric grand walls and original mahogany interiors making for an ‘I Do’ destination that’s a little different.

Arbitration Room

Bathed in natural light, this beautifully intimate room in the venue’s third floor offers a stylish setting for your ceremony.

Hosting up to 70 of your nearest and dearest, imposing Gothic walls and a domed skylight are teamed with contemporary luxe interiors to bring you a light and airy soirée, tucked away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
